WordPress done properly, without thirty plugins holding it together

Custom themes with no page builder lock-in, plugin count cut, security hardened and documented, staging in place so updates stop being a Friday afternoon risk.

Staging before every update
Offsite backups, restore-tested
No page builder lock-in

Every engagement includes

  • Plugin audit included
  • Security hardening applied
  • Staging environment set up
  • Offsite backups configured
  • Theme code you own outright
Why this goes wrong

What we usually find, and what we do instead

<p>WordPress Development by Webcotec is planned, designed and developed around your business workflow. We focus on performance, security, usability, SEO structure and long-term scalability so your digital system is easy to manage and ready to grow.</p>

What we usually find

  • Thirty-odd plugins — each one code someone else maintains, and one more way in for an attacker.
  • A page builder on every page — producing two megabytes of nested markup that no caching plugin can rescue.
  • Updates done straight on production — which is exactly how a site goes down at 4pm on a Friday.
  • One unpatched plugin — which is where almost every WordPress compromise we clean up actually started.
  • No backup anyone has ever restored — so nobody knows whether it works until the day it matters.

What we do instead

  • Cut the plugin count — most sites drop two thirds of them with no loss of function at all.
  • Build a custom theme — a fraction of the page weight, and no licence tied to a builder.
  • Stage, test, then deploy — with a tested rollback, so patching stops being an event.
  • Patch on a schedule — with the security checklist applied and documented, not installed and forgotten.
  • Restore-test the backups — offsite and scheduled, and proven to actually come back.
What's included

What we actually work on

Not a checklist of 200 "optimisations". These are the things that move the result.

Custom WordPress theme

Built from scratch against your design with a clean template hierarchy and no page builder dependency. Typically a fraction of the page weight of a marketplace theme.

Custom plugin development

Where no plugin does what you need, built properly with WordPress hooks, prepared statements, nonce verification and capability checks. Not queries concatenated into strings.

Plugin audit and consolidation

We list every plugin, what it costs you in load time and licence fees, and what a few lines in the theme could replace. The list usually gets much shorter.

WooCommerce development

Product architecture, custom checkout fields, Australian shipping zones, GST configuration and payment gateways, built to survive a sale day rather than just a demo.

Security hardening

File permissions, disabled file editing, login rate limiting, two-factor authentication, security headers and a monitored patching routine, all documented with evidence.

Staging and backups

A staging environment, tested updates, scheduled offsite backups with proven restores, uptime monitoring and a written rollback procedure.

How we work

A sequence, not a black box

You see the plan before we touch anything, and you approve what gets done.

01

Audit

Full review of themes, plugins, security posture, performance and database health, delivered to you in writing.

02

Stabilise

Security patches, backups and staging in place before anything new is built. The risk gets fixed first.

03

Rebuild

Custom theme or plugin work on staging, with the plugin count coming down as functionality moves into the theme.

04

Optimise

Caching, queries, assets and images tuned, then measured on real mobile devices rather than a lab score.

05

Maintain

Monthly patching, monitoring and backups, with a written report of exactly what changed.

FAQ

Questions Australian businesses ask about WordPress

Is WordPress secure enough for a business site?

WordPress core is actively maintained and audited. Almost every compromise we see comes from an outdated plugin, a weak admin password or no patching routine. Hardened and maintained properly it is entirely suitable for business use.

Should I use a page builder like Elementor or Divi?

They are good for teams who need to build pages without a developer, and they cost you in page weight and lock-in. If speed matters or the design is settled, a custom theme is faster and cheaper to run over time.

Can you fix a slow WordPress site without rebuilding it?

Often, yes. Plugin consolidation, query optimisation, image handling and caching usually get significant gains. If the theme itself is the problem we will tell you, with the numbers, rather than charging for optimisation that cannot work.

How much does WordPress maintenance cost?

Ongoing maintenance for a business site is typically a few hundred dollars a month for patching, backups, monitoring and a small allowance of changes. E-commerce and higher-traffic sites cost more because the testing burden is higher.

Our site was hacked. Can you clean it?

Yes. Cleanup means identifying the entry point, removing the injected code, patching the vulnerability, rotating every credential and requesting a Google review if the site was flagged. Rebuilding from a clean backup is sometimes faster than cleaning.

Can you build a custom plugin for our process?

Yes, and it is often the right answer when you are paying for three plugins that nearly do the job. Built with proper hooks, prepared statements and capability checks so it survives core updates.

Do you work with WooCommerce?

Yes, including Australian GST configuration, shipping zones, payment gateways and accounting integration.

Will I be locked into using you?

No. The theme and any custom plugin go to your repository with documentation, and hosting stays in your name. Any competent WordPress developer can pick it up.
